About The Smugglers CaveThe Smugglers Cave is a family run business which has steadily grown into a successful retail and mail order company importing and marketing a wide range of handcrafted items from South East Asia. We personally travel throughout South East Asia seeking the unique and the unusual. Every item is individually selected enabling us to provide accurate information as to the origin and name of the craftsman. We purchase directly from the various craftsmen by visiting their homes, allowing us the pleasure of knowing their families, sharing their lives and learning a little of their culture. After fifteen years of "back-packing" throughout South East Asia, dealing with the various phobias of Asia's abundant biting insects, scorpions, snakes, culture shocks and language barriers (not to mention the inevitable "Kathmandu quick step"), we have become accustomed to Asia's environment, happily accepting and welcoming it as pArts of our lives. Our travels have taken us through Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Singapore, Cambodia, Macao, Laos, and the Indonesian islands of Java, Sumatra, Lombok, Bali, and the Gilli Isles. During this time we came into contact with numerous village craftsmen producing a wealth of unique and diverse hand made crafts. Fascinated by their ingenuity and creativity, coupled with the originality of each item, came the idea of importing these crafts enabling others to share and admire their skill. Our retail outlets offer thousands of items from handcarved wooden animals including pigs, dolphins, cats, elephants, hippos, horses, ducks, and seals, to carved wooden abstract figures and dancers, also bamboo, seagrass and rattan furniture and suites, solid teak furniture, tree bark lamps, recycled glass lamps, Buddhas, mosaic mirrors, dream catchers, wooden wind dancers, wind chimes, silver and costume jewellery, Chinese dragons, wooden and painted masks, rainsticks, didgeridoos, handthrown terracotta pottery and ceramics, chess sets, carved hardwood mirrors, handpainted batiks, wooden games including Jenga, sarongs, shirts and trousers, painted flowers and fruit, plus a wealth of other items for the home or for a special gift. If you are interested in any of our other items not currently offered on our web site, please contact us and we will be happy to email photographs and details. |
